UNIX SPECIALIST

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

• Administration of RHEL5 servers located in PCH offices across Russia and running Progress OpenEdge databases.

Responsibilities:

• Designs, programs and sets up standard unix software installation packages for implementation in the Distribution Centers and Plants.
• Designs, programs and sets up unix scripts for applications.
• Develops hardware and unix-related software requirements and standards
• Performs and coordinates upgrades and software licensing as needed.
• Troubleshoots unix problems and provide hot-line support countrywide.
• Prepares administration documentation
• Performs other duties as assigned or as required by supervisor.

Position characteristics:

• Supervisory Responsibility:  None.
• Decision Making:  Generally makes decisions on software design and following implementation based on corporate standard and policies.
• Work Contacts:   Professional and administrative staff in Moscow office, IT regional staff.
• Reports to: Development Manager.
• Education and Experience Required: College/university degree in Computer Science and Programming or equivalent.  A minimum of 3 years related experience.

Knowledge and skills :

• In-depth knowledge of Linux, Red Hat experience is a plus.
• Database administration experience. Knowledge of Progress OpenEdge is a plus.
• Understanding of the software development principles, standards, design techniques.
• Good working English.
• Solid writing and communication skills.
• Strong inter-personal and communication skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison.
• Diligent and dependable.

Technical competencies:

• Is comfortable with most aspects of unix systems administration - system installation and configuration, mail setup, printing systems, security, installing third-party software, etc.
• A solid understanding of a unix-based operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts, can use performance analysis to tune systems.
• Mail administration experience
• Samba administration, including integration with AD
• Excellent knowledge of scripting languages: sh, Perl, awk.
• Experience with network security, ability to identify and rectify potential weak spots, knowledge of automated scanning and intrusion detection tools.

Special Working Conditions:

• Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects under time pressure.
• 3 or more years experience of linux development, implementation and support in a big corporate environment and with geographically distributed locations.
